Andrelton Simmons to Atlanta!
Congratulations to Andrelton Simmons on his call to Atlanta! The news came down on Wednesday night after the Mississippi Braves and Montgomery Biscuits were rained out. Simmons was batting .292 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in 43 games.
Double-A is always the biggest jump a hitter makes in his minor league progression. The pitchers at this level are a lot smarter and have better stuff, so the fact that Simmons’ bat didn’t fall off at all from his 2011 Carolina League batting title in the jump to double A tells me that he’s ready for the next challenge. And of course, his glove and arm are big-league ready as reported by every news outlet that saw him in Spring.
He becomes the 12th player to be called directly to Atlanta from double-A Mississippi. The others are Brian McCann, Blaine Boyer, Jorge Vasquez, Jeff Francouer, Jay Powell, Joey Devine, Martin Prado, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Jose Ascanio, Clint Sammons and Randall Delgado.
Listen live to tonight’s doubleheader with the Montgomery Biscuits beginning at 6:00 PM CT. Listen at 103.9 WYAB in Jackson, or online here.
